■ generous の解説
generous は、「貴族の生まれ」という意味のラテン語 genrosus を語源とした形容詞です。 お金や物について、物惜しみしない気質を表現した (a) 「モノをあげたり使ったりする際に気前がよい」という意味と、 貴族のように鷹揚な気質を表現した(b)「人や物に対して寛大な」という意味があります。
Collins Cobuild 英英辞典の (b) の定義がなかなか素敵なので、ご紹介しておきましょう。 “A generous person is friendly, helpful, and willing to see the good qualities in someone or something.” （generous な人とは、親しみやすく親切で、人や物の長所に注目しようとしてくれる人である。） 「人の長所に注目できる」というのも、ひとつのすばらしい長所ですよね。
with を前置詞にとると、「何に関して気前がよい」となり、to をとると「誰/何に対して寛大な」という表現になります。
(a) 「気前がよい、物惜しみしない」
- Most of the faculty is generous with time to give advice for students. （ほとんどの教授は学生に指導する時間を惜しまない。）
- It is very generous of you to donate such a huge amount of money to the orphanage. （その孤児院にそんなに大金を寄付しているとは、あなたは本当に気前がいいんですね。）
(b) 「寛大な、鷹揚な」
- Small children have magic to make adults generous to them. （小さな子供は大人を彼らに親切にさせる魔法をもっている。）
- The deceased Jewish professor was gifted with a generous nature and a brave heart. （亡くなったユダヤ人の教授は、寛大さと勇敢さをあわせ持っていた。）
さらに、名詞を修飾する（= 限定用法）の場合に、物が「豊富な、たくさんの」という意味もあります。これも、物が「気前よく、たくさん用意してある」と考えれば、基本の意味からそう離れてはいません。
(c) 「豊富な、たくさんの」
- The dish is served with a generous helping of two types of mushrooms, which are shitake mushrooms and portabella mushrooms. （この料理には、しいたけとポルタベッラの二種類のきのこをたっぷり添えてお出しします。）
- Her apartment has a huge walk-in closet with generous space for hanging garments. （彼女の部屋には、服をつるすための空間がたっぷりとられた、大きなウォークインクローゼットがついている。）
generous から派生した副詞は generously で、generous の (1)、(2)、(3) の意味を全て文脈で表現します。名詞は、generousness または generosity となり、「気前よさ、寛大さ、鷹揚さ」になります。
- Many successful entrepreneurs give generously to charity in order to return a part of their profits to society. （多くの成功した企業家らは、慈善活動に気前よく寄付して、利益の一部を社会に還元している。）
- Those who were devastated by the tsunami were thankful for the generousness [generosity] shown by the people of other countries. （津波の被害を受けた人々は、外国の人々が見せた気前のよさに感謝した。）

(5) Be generous with kindly words, especially about those who are absent. （kindly = 「思いやりのある））
(6) Take beaten eggs together with a generous amount of sugar and soak the bread slices in the beaten eggs. （soak = 「…を浸す」、beaten eggs = 「溶き卵」）
