■ 表現の解説

英語力がある程度まで伸びてくると、ボキャブラリーを増やすには、単語帳を開くだけではなく、「この単語はどういう状況で使うんだろう？」「他にどんなふうに言い換えられるんだろう？」「どんな語源なんだろう？」「どういう言葉と組み合わせて使えるんだろう？」というふうに、新しい単語の意味を連鎖的に広げていくことが大切です。

会話の中で知らない言葉に出会ったとき、逃さずに自分のものにするためのとっさの表現をいくつかご紹介します。

1. What does ... mean? （...はどういう意味ですか。）
2. How do you spell it? （スペルはどうつづるんですか。）
3. Does it have a synonym/antonym? （同義語/反意語はありますか。）
4. Is there another form of the word? （派生した単語はありますか。）
5. Can you give me an example of that? （この単語の例はありますか。）
6. What kind of word is it, a nown or a verb? （この単語の品詞はなんですか。）

ついでですが、ネイティブの先生に教わる機会がある場合は、基本的な文法用語は英語で押さえておくことをおすすめします。 例えば、noun（名詞）、verb （動詞）、adjective（形容詞）、adverb（副詞） から prural（複数形）、past perfect（過去完了形）、relative pronoun（関係代名詞）、auxiliary（助動詞）など。英語でかかれた文法書を一つもっていると便利かもしれませんね。

A: It is a noun. When the word ends with -tion, it is always a noun.

A: Sure. "Immunize" is the verb form of immunization, which means to give someone an immunization.
